Broadbills

Broadbills are among the most spectacular birds on earth but most are exceptionally difficult to observe. This combination makes them perhaps my favorite or all families of birds. When you are fortunate enough to see one of them, it is an great day

goldfish

Goldfish actually exist in a far wider range of colors than their name implies. They are suitable for both ponds and home aquariums, although the different color varieties can vary in terms of their hardiness, and not all are suited to being kept outdoors all year in areas where temperatures can fluctuate widely.

cheetah

The fastest land animal in the world, the cheetah is a marvel of evolution. The cheetah’s slender, long-legged body is built for speed. Cheetahs are tan in color with black spots all over their bodies. They can also be distinguished from other big cats by their smaller size, spotted coats, small heads and ears and distinctive "tear stripes" that stretch from the corner of the eye to the side of the nose.

gulls

Small to large seabirds, many of which also live inland for at least part of the year; some are strictly marine. Most are grey, black and white when fully mature, but extensively marked with various shades of brown during from one to four years of immaturity. They have long, slim wings and can fly exceptionally well, but also strong legs, which give them reasonably good mobility on the ground. They swim buoyantly and often resort to water to roost at night. There are many other gulls around the world that do not visit the UK.

Dwarf Rainbowfish

Dwarf Rainbowfish is just one common name for this fish. The Praecox Rainbowfish has quite a variety of very descriptive names such as Neon Rainbowfish, Dwarf Blue Rainbowfish, Diamond Rainbowfish, and Peacock Rainbowfish. This fish is an intelligent, beautiful and above all spirited fish. If kept healthy and happy these fish will always be active and amusing. They have brilliant blue iridescent scales and brightly colored fins. Like all rainbowfish, they are very smart and seem to be especially aware of things going on outside the tank.

Berg adder

This is the most common poisonous snake in the Natal Drakensberg and is found on rocky mountain slopes at all altitudes, even the escarpment. It has a relatively narrower, longer head than the Puff Adder, is more lightly built, and has a much more patterned appearance, this consisting of two longitudinal light bands between which lie two wavy patterns joined at the middle. Below the longitudinal bands are some pale spots. The Berg Adders most commonly encountered are nowhere near the above lengths - 10 to 20 cm is a much more representative size. These younger snakes are dark grey to black, with light grey patterning. The rarer, larger adults may be dark brown with yellow / fawn patterning, and can become fat enough to be mistaken for a Puff Adder although the two species are very differently patterned.
The Berg Adder is responsible for the most bites amongst hikers and climbers, since it is in the habit of sunning itself on small rock ledges as well as paths. Many of the recorded bites have been to the hands and fingers, inflicted as hikers and climbers have attempted to clamber up steep slopes using ledges as hand-holds. It is a very irritable snake and is easily provoked into biting, although it prefers to escape from danger while making a loud hissing noise. Very small specimens hiss with such considerable vigour that their whole body vibrates, and it sounds like they are squeaking.
